Identification and Analysis of the Technical Components of Carpets in Hamedan County
Sepehr Qasemi * , Ashkan Rahmani , Seyed Aliakbar Seyyedi
Abstract:   (70 Views)
Hamedan County is recognized as one of the most prominent carpet-weaving centers in western Iran, particularly in the rural weaving tradition. The handwoven carpets of this region not only adhere to the general characteristics of Persian carpet-making but also exhibit exclusive technical features unique to the area. The Central and Sharah districts are considered the primary hubs for the production and export of carpets in Hamedan province—carpets that are woven with clearly identifiable and region-specific technical traits. Although there are shared elements with other parts of the province in terms of knot type, fiber material, and dyeing methods, the structural features of carpets from these districts distinguish them significantly. As in many parts of Iran, carpet weaving in Hamedan County is categorized into two main sectors: urban and rural. The rural tradition, with several centuries of history, has been widespread in the villages of the Central and Sharah districts as well as in the surrounding areas of Hamedan and Qahavand. In contrast, workshop-based (urban) weaving, with a history of approximately one century, is primarily practiced in the city of Hamedan and, occasionally, in its surrounding villages. The aim of this study is to analyze the structural and technical characteristics of carpets woven in Hamedan County. Specifically, the authors seek to answer the following question: What are the structural and technical features of single-weft carpets produced in this region? This research is descriptive in nature and follows a descriptive-analytical methodology. Data collection was conducted through both library resources and fieldwork, including interviews and observation cards. The statistical population consists of carpets from Hamedan County, with a sample of 21 selected pieces. Data analysis was carried out using qualitative methods. The findings indicate that the technical components of carpets and rugs woven in Hamedan County largely converge in aspects such as the type of weaving tools, loom structure and material, warping method, warp fiber composition, coarse and fine wefts, knot type and fiber, weaving structure, selvage technique, kilim end, warping knot style, and finishing method. However, notable differences were observed in knot density (Raj count), carpet dimensions, and overall weaving quality. Most samples exhibited a Raj count within the range of 10 to 25.
