In the last few decades, the impact of the postmodern era’s attitudes and developments on all fields has been considered by researchers. A reflection on the intellectual trends of the second half of the twentieth century shows that during this period, the strong influence of cognitive sciences and philosophy on architectural theories, as well as other fields, has led to the formation of new perspectives. However, so far, little research has specifically addressed the relationship between postmodern developments and architectural theories. This article attempts to explain and compare the theories of the two fields of postmodernism and architecture in order to answer the questions “What are the characteristics of art in the postmodern era?” and “How did these characteristics lead to the transformation of the approach to “meaning” and “concept” in architecture?” The goal is to strengthen the theoretical foundations of architecture by searching for the reasons for the formation and transformation of the approach to conceptualism and meaning-making in the postmodern era. This research is of a qualitative type and its method is based on studying documents and library resources and then describing and analyzing them. The logical reasoning method has also been used for comparison and conclusion. Based on the analysis of the results obtained from the theoretical foundations, it can be argued that the introduction of postmodern paradigms and their connection with design theories with an emphasis on the cognitive domain can help strengthen the thinking of architects and conceptualization in architecture; The research findings also show that postmodern paradigms, which in a way indicate a change in the direction of thought and push architecture towards cognitive domains, have also had a significant impact on strengthening the theoretical foundations of architecture, the specific result of which is the formation of conceptual design in architecture.
