Kamaluddin Behzad, the eminent painter of the Timurid and Safavid periods, skillfully portrayed human emotions and mystical concepts in his paintings through the masterful use of color. Color, as a key element, plays a fundamental role in Behzad’s works; through it, he conveys the spiritual meanings of stories while depicting everyday and courtly scenes. In addition to illustrating daily and royal life, Behzad also creates an emotional and spiritual atmosphere in his artworks. In the miniature “The Sufi Sama Ceremony” (Majlis-e Sama’-e Sufiyan), colors serve as symbols of various stages of spiritual experience and human emotion. This painting is particularly notable for its symbolic and mystical use of color. From a mystical perspective, colors symbolically represent the different stages of spiritual journey and purification. The theories of Ala al-Dawla Semnani, the 13th-century mystic, play a significant role in explaining the meanings of colors in Islamic mysticism. These ideas reveal how Behzad’s color choices reflect spiritual and emotional states. This study aims to analyze the colors used in the clothing of the characters in relation to mystical concepts from the perspective of Ala al-Dawla Semnani, addressing two main questions: (1)What are Semnani’s theories regarding color? (2)How are Semnani’s ideas reflected in the color compositions of the garments in “The Sufi Sama Ceremony” miniature? The research method is descriptive-analytical, and data were collected from library sources. The results show that black color most frequently appears alongside blue, red, white-green, yellow, and light black hues. Semnani’s thoughts on light and color evoke the mystical journey toward divine perfection. Behzad, with a deep understanding of the spiritual meaning of Sufi dance, employed shades of black, blue, red, white-green, yellow, light black, and bright green in the dervishes’ garments, which perfectly align with Semnani’s theories.
