Description of historical cities of Iran in the Tarikh Wassaf
Ali Taqavi *
Abstract:   (27 Views)
During the period of Mongol predominance over Iran, historiography became very prevalent in Iran, and several important historical books have remained from that era.Tarikh Wassaf is one of these books that, in addition to mentioning some of the important historical events and incidents in the seventh and eighth centuries AH, provides its audience with other valuable information in areas such as anthropology, popular culture, Iranian art and architecture, especially about several historical cities in Iran. The present study, using a historical method, is dedicated to examining the historical cities of Iran, with an emphasis on the architectural condition of its famous buildings and places from the perspective of Tarikh Wassaf. This book contains significant information about the historical cities of Shiraz, Siraf, Kish, Tabriz, Ojan, and Soltanieh and their famous buildings. The introduction of the cities of Siraf and Kish relies more on past texts and documents, and Wassaf does not mention much about the details of their architecture; but in the case of Shiraz, the author's birthplace, as well as Tabriz and Soltanieh, which were at times the capitals of the Mongol Ilkhanates, he has turned to introducing the famous places and buildings of these cities and sometimes describing their geometric dimensions and architectural decorations, with greater care, due to his bureau posts and presence in the courts of several of the last Ilkhanates, and access to reliable documents and sources.

Keywords: Tarikh Wassaf, historical cities, Shiraz, Siraf, Soltanieh, Tabriz.
