This research examines the mass-space system in the native architecture of Hormozgan Province and attempts to present native housing design patterns as a solution for contemporary housing design. Native housing is a sustainable and efficient model in architecture due to its response to climatic, cultural, and social needs. In this regard, the mass-space system, which expresses the interaction between physical elements (mass) and spatial features (lack of mass), has been studied as a key concept. The research method is descriptive-analytical and applied in terms of purpose. Research data was collected through field studies in the three cities of Bandar Kong, Bandar Khamir, and Bandar Lengeh. In this research, quantitative and qualitative analysis was conducted based on indicators related to mass and space, and selected examples of residential architecture in this region were carefully examined. The findings show that the local architecture of Hormozgan province follows three main patterns in the mass-space system: the four-sided, three-sided, and two-sided patterns. The four-sided pattern, the most common type in Bandar Kong city, optimizes climatic conditions such as ventilation and sunlight control due to the central courtyard being surrounded by four sides. The three-sided pattern, which is mostly observed in Bandar Khamir and Bandar Kong, increases the possibility of ventilation and access to open space by leaving one side of the courtyard open. The two-sided pattern, which is limited to smaller houses in Bandar Khamir, is designed to respond to simpler spatial and climatic needs. The results show that the ratio between mass and space in the houses studied is on average 60to 70percent for mass and 30to 40percent for space, which has been relatively stable in all the cities studied. This research emphasizes the importance of the mass-space system in creating spatial quality and promoting the identity of vernacular architecture and suggests that the concepts extracted from this system can be used as an effective model in designing contemporary housing with a sustainable approach.
